In June, Teal and David hired ele3 for our premier wedding planning services for their destination wedding in Glen Arbor, MI. During the pre-planning portion we contacted the new and talented Andy Wakeman of Andy Wakeman Photography out of Traverse City. We blogged about the wedding and featured a few of his pictures at that time, but today we'd like to tell you a little bit more about Andy. When did you know that you wanted to be a photographer?
I have a graphic design background and I've always been in love with images, composition and all art forms in general. Photography was always a hobby that very naturally transitioned into a career path.

How long have you been in the business, and what makes you different from the other photographers out there?
This past summer was my first full season of weddings. I had photographed a few weddings for friends and family the year before. Happy with my results I decided to put a website together. The response since then has been incredible, way beyond my expectations. I think my background is a little different than other photographers. My graphic design / marketing background has given me loads of experience on high budget photo shoots as an "art director". It was a very natural transition for me to pick up the camera and begin shooting since I had been around the process all along.One other thing that makes my images different is just recently I've started shooting some film at my weddings (not the whole wedding just select shots). It really compliments my style of shooting and makes a really soft organic image. The cool thing is with digital scans the bride still receives all of the film images on a disc just as if they were shot digitally.

What is your favorite type of shot?
I love shots that have a vintage feel to them. I don't just mean what the bride is wearing either. Certain compositions and poses just have a more vintage feel. I love anything quirky, sometimes I'll have the bride hold the bouquet in front of their faces while they kiss or something like that. Also, I'm a sucker for using props - old cameras, umbrellas, hats, fans, anything vintage and cool.

Explain your wedding day shooting process.
I'm shooting to tell a story. If I see an interesting texture or decoration then I capture it. These detail photos by themselves are a little bit vague but next to a portrait of the bride they really complete the story. You see this editorial shooting style all over the bridal magazines and it's something that I try to recreate for each of my weddings. Also, I always try to work it out where I have about 20 minutes with the bride and groom alone. For me this is the best way to get the couple relaxed and comfortable which is so important

If you could trade places with any other person for a week, famous or not famous, living or dead, real or fictional, with whom would it be?
I'd trade places with my 3 year old daughter. Mostly because she says the funniest things and I would like to know what she's thinking.

Lovely Jeweled Toned Real Wedding

I can not contain my excitement for this weekends wedding. This is such a special event with fabulous vendors. Our lovely bride and handsome groom are from Pittsburgh so we are truly looking forward to reuniting with them and seeing their vision put into life. ele3 Event Design had the chance to design their wedding decor, reception, & florals for them. The main theme throughout the wedding is going to be sharp chartreuse green and black. The bridesmaids bouquets are going to be a gorgeous jewel tones with each maid caring a different hue of pink, violet, blue, and white with the bride to be carrying green, accented with black satin ribbon. I look forward to showing you a sneak preview next week!

Weekly Date Night

Weddings are filled with dresses, flowers, showers, parties, and food. All of these elements are wonderful and such a special time in a bride and grooms life. Enjoy, relax, and soak up all the precious memories. However, with your planning process remember to get in the habit of taking time for each other, AWAY from wedding planning. Take time to enjoy each other's company, set time aside for a weekly date night for the two of you, it may be an effort to take the time away but it is truly worth it.

The best aspect of taking time for date night is exploring the wonderful city of Grand Rapids we are fortunate to live in. If you are looking for a great date night to get away and enjoy, this week I recommend kicking it back in East Town at the Wealthy Street Theatre for their retro movies presented by the Meanwhile . With movie ticket prices at $5.00 dollars per person, buttery popcorn, cold beverages, and American classics like the "Three Amigos", no couple can refuse. I would highly suggest this location to any photographer for a few unique shots of their bride and groom. The old theater is part of Grand Rapids history and the interior has many unique characteristics that would be a joy to capture! Why not get married in the old romantic theater??? Not only do date nights inspire you as a couple but they also inspire you and your wedding! Remember to take time and be inspired by each other.

Escape Tradition

Gorgeous Barn

When ele3 Event Design & Planning came across this gorgeous barn, while we were in Glen Arbor for the Erickson wedding, we could not resist but to take pictures! This barn would make an absolutely amazing venue! This barn is simply gorgeous from its high weathering peaks to its white outline that is accented perfectly with shades of green running throughout the landscape. I love the "smaller barns", they would make wonderful dressing rooms for the brides and her maids and the groom and his men! As much as our creativity and design started transposing in our conversation the barn is actually owned by a Glen Arbor local and they have slowly been restoring the farmhouse as well as the barn. I just had to share the romance of this barn, I hope you enjoy it!

Welcome Pea Pod

Our team here at ele3 Event Design & Planning would like to give a huge congratulations to Kate & Matt Upton and welcome their new sweet "pea pod" Niles Drake Upton into this wonderful world.

A little over a week ago ele3 Event Design & Planning had the oppertunity to give our friend, sister, and daughter a baby shower. The shower was neutral since Kate and Matt did not know what gender pea pod was going to be. We chose to show Kates sunny personality and designed the shower around daisies. Daisies resemble happiness, sunshine, and warmth a perfect match for the mommy to be. Kates pseudo mom, Sherrie and I had a wonderful time designing the decor of the event. Lovely Blooms

Please do enjoy the above lovely blooms ele3 Event Design & Planning made for our clients wedding last week. The Bridal Bouquet consisted of Baccara Roses, Mini Cala-Lilies, and a burst of fluttering Cymbidium Orchids, accented perfectly with silver satin ribbon. The color pallet was fuschia pink, burgundy, and silver. The Boutonnieres consisted of the Baccara Rose, Wax Leaf, and Ruscus Greenery accompanied with silver satin ribbon.

Of course these are our own amateur photos we can not wait to show you what the photographer captured. Not to mention the bride was absolutely gorgeous! Stay tuned!

Q:When did you realize that taking pictures was a passion for you?

A: I have been taking photos all my life. If I had to narrow it down to
a time in my life that the passion for me really took off....it would
be the first time I did a shoot and the mom took one look at the photos of
her daughter and started to cry.

Q:What made you want to take your passion and turn it into a business?

A: To have the ability to do what I love and love what I do! I know
that might sound corny...But it is so true. How many people get to live
their dream job???

Q:What type of style is your photography?

A: Our objective is to make you look the best you have ever looked in
your life, while telling the story of your dream wedding. Of course you
can and should have confidence that we will capture the precious
moments on your big day without direction from you. Our style of photography is
glamorous, fashionable yet classic, and natural at the same time.
We do not pose you on the wedding day; we prompt and direct you in a
way that appears natural. The more you respond to our direction the less we
get involved. We will not interrupt natural magic but we will help
create it if the need arises.

Q:Can you tell us about a typical wedding day for you?

A: Is there such a thing as a typical wedding day??? (laughing...)
Seriously...I approach every wedding that I do with the mind set of
(and I have this written on my office wall) "Shoot as if your life depends
on it...Because it does"!!! If a married couple could only salvage one
item while fleeing their burning home, most would choose their wedding
album. Photos are priceless, celebrating a time in your life where you've
never been happier, never looked better and are sharing the most precious
moments of your life with the people you love most. At Schrader
Photography we don't take this responsibility lightly.

Q:Do you have any advice to readers who still may be looking for a
Photographer?

A: Connectivity!!! You must have a great connection with your
photographer. You have to be able to see their vision for your day and
you must be able to see yourself in front of their lens. These two
things are a must. Couples book Schrader Photography because they want
images that are timeless and synonymous with style and finesse. A team
effort is required to achieve this style. We photograph your wedding
with the end result of your album in mind. Although your initial
investment includes a certain amount of sides/pages, we don't take just
enough photographs to fill the pages you have booked. We can never add
more images later; on the other hand, if we take enough photographs to
fill 100 pages and you only want or can only afford 30 then this is one
of the best problems you can have. Our challenge is to take the best,
most intriguing and evocative photographs on your wedding day. We
always rise to this challenge and present you with the wonderful dilemma of
having too many gorgeous photographs. Your challenge is to resist
buying them all!

Q: Where did your passion for sustainability come from?

I grew up in the country and loved the woods around our family weekend cabin. Gardening has always been a therapeutic and rewarding pastime. Fall 2009 Trend Report: Colored Fur

Just as the warm weather blows in to greet us the fashion industry is already looking ahead to the upcoming 2009 fall season. When I came across this vogue-vintage-glam style I had to share it with you. In the 2007 & 2008 wedding season colored shoes proved to be a highlight for brides in expressing some personality & flare through their wedding day pictures. For the 2009 fall and winter season colored fur is up and coming. Who can resist the warm trendy look! I can see a cheeky bride pulling off this style in a heartbeat! Although the look may not fit to everyones taste it will suite some! My personal favorite is the canary yellow "Jackie-O" coat with the deliberate yet chic fur accent. What are your thoughts on this new and upcoming trend???

Bridal Gowns in Seville, Spain

On a recent trip to Spain, I couldn't help but take a few pics of bridal gowns that I found in tiny corner stores along beautiful winding streets in some of the Barrios. Absolutely gorgeous! And as we were walking through Plaza de Espana, we happened to stumble on a bride getting her pic taken. How lovely! Having a wedding in a foreign country isn't for everyone, but what an opportunity! If you could get married in Europe or another country would you do it, and where would it be?

Today's Planning Etiquette

With so many different resources out there, I would say wedding planning might have become a little more complicated than 1955. From internet sites, to blogs, to print media, and family members, everyone has advice on planning your wedding.

Re-focus, and remember that the special day is between you and your fiance. List out what the both of you desire for your day and keep true to those desires, if you are time restricted or inexperienced, hire a consultant, we do more than logistics, we can be your creative partner with a wealth of ideas, we can help negotiate contracts and come up with a realistic budget, we do all the vendor legwork for you, and all you have to do is show up for the appointments and tastings.

Once you have an idea of budget, sit down with all the people contributing and discuss how much each can contribute, or what each couple/person wants to contribute, again stay true to your wishes and what is most important for you and your fiance, also take into consideration the suggestions of the other people paying, but ultimately money given shouldn't have any strings attached so the final decision is yours.

Budget is really the determining factor in what is appropriate and what you can afford to have at your wedding, there are so many options out there, the planning world is your oyster, have fun and enjoy it, it really does go by so fast!

About Gifts
"If only an announcement of the marriage or invitation to the ceremony is received, no gift is necessary. Wedding gifts should not be presented in person. Gifts sent before the ceremony should be addressed to the bride: after the ceremony to the bride and groom. To each person sending a gift, the bride should write a note of thanks before the wedding. If she delays her thanks until after the wedding, she must then write promptly. Only a written note on personal paper will suffice-printed or engraved cards of thanks are improper. Gifts can be of silver, china, glassware, linen or perhaps small pieces of furniture. A visit to the Gift Consultant at the store where the bride has registered her patterns will be invaluable in the choice of a suitable gift. It is not uncommon for most brides to receive some duplicate gifts-and unless they are engraved specifically for the bride's use, it is quite correct to exchange them. She should, of course, inform the giver of what she has selected in exchange. Many brides prefer to hold a tea or luncheon shortly before the wedding when intimate friends are invited to see the trousseau and wedding gifts. The cards of the senders may be removed but the bride should be certain to keep a record in her book. Checks should not be displayed, but a plain card with the amount of the check could be used in it's place. This is doubly important if the custom of a wedding day display of gifts is followed."

Division of Expenses
"The bride's parents provide the wedding invitations, cards, trousseau, all floral or other decorations, music, fees for use of the church, transportation for the bridal party to and from church, everything for the wedding breakfast or reception, the bride's gifts to the bridesmaids and a wedding gift to the bride-groom. For double ring ceremonies, the bride purchases the ring for the bride-groom. The bride's engagement and wedding rings, her personal gift, license, clergyman's and sexton's fees, gifts to the best man and ushers, and the bride's bouquet are provided by the bridegroom. He may also provide the bridesmaid's flowers if he wishes. Immediately after the ceremony, he must assume all expenses of his wife, including transportation to the reception or breakfast and all costs of the wedding trip."

The Formal Wedding
The fully formal wedding is usually a church wedding, though it may be held in the home, club or hotel. Naturally it involves more expense and planning. Services of the clergyman and use of the church must first be obtained. The organist, choir, soloist, or other music must be arranged. Floral decorations must be decided upon and florist contracted. Transportation to and from church must be provided. Every detail must be perfected as far ahead as possible. That is why a rehearsal is so essential to the success of a formal wedding. It will bring to light any flaws in planning. At the rehearsal all persons having an active part in the ceremony are instructed by some fully informed person and clergyman. The bride-to-be is represented in the rehearsal by a "stand-in," while she and her mother stand by and help direct proceedings. After the rehearsal it is customary for one of the engaged couple to give a small party for the attendants.

Today's second piece is on The Informal Wedding
"The wedding should be in keeping with the circumstances of the bride's parents. Informal weddings are usually home weddings. Their simplicity and friendliness make them charming affairs, if they are well arranged. Since the guest list is necessarily smaller, they are more private than church weddings. Decorations for the home wedding may be lavish or simple. A temporary altar or a flower-banked corner of a large room makes an attractive setting for the ceremony. A harp, organ, piano or even a phonograph with special records may provide appropriate background music. If the bride's parents have a beautiful lawn or garden, the wedding may be solemnized out-of-doors. Simple weddings may, of course, be held in a church, in one of the rooms of the church or in the clergyman's study or home. In such weddings, the decorations, if any, are simple and the wedding party small. It is improper to hold the wedding at the bridegroom's home. If the bride is without parents or near relatives, the marriage should take place in a church or rectory-although the reception may be held in the bridegroom's home."

My mother-in-law came across a 1955 booklet of The Etiquette of the Engagement and Wedding sent to her sister-in-law when she was engaged. It is from Keepsake Diamond Rings, founded by A.H. Pond Company out of NYC, and edited by Modern Bride Magazine. There is so many lovely and old fashioned tidbits of information, I wish I could share the whole booklet with you, but decided, naturally, upon the "Etiquette of Planning" to be blogged in 5 parts. The first segment starts today, but not with a little prep, straight from the booklet. "All wedding plans and arrangements are made by the bride-to-be and her parents. They may consult the girl's fiance if they choose, but responsibility for all the details rests with them."

The Time
"After the day is set, the hour of the wedding should be considered. This is determined by the wishes of the bride and bridegroom, and the convenience of the wedding party-there is no set rule. The time of the wedding may be determined by church requirements or by the hour when the bridal couple must depart on their wedding trip. In general, afternoon or evening is the most popular time for elaborate and formal weddings. Morning weddings are often more simple affairs and are followed by a wedding breakfast and a reception, if the bride desires."

ele3 visited the Woldumar Nature Center in Lansing this afternoon. Woldumar is a piece of property on the south side of Lansing for school aged children that offers numerous outreach and on-site Environmental Education programs for children as well as adults. The coolest part is that they partake in Project GREEN, which provides high school students with hands-on opportunities to gain and apply classroom science, math and social studies skills to local water quality tests, which they are then guided to take informed action on any identified water problems, and try to find a resolution. So, how does this apply to the wedding industry? Woldumar also boasts a white barn perfect for the rustic, country, bride, or even the romantic. The space has so much potential, the list of ideas for decorating is really endless! When you rent the barn or the whole property, you know it will go toward an extremely important cause.

Just like the name presents itself, up and coming Jennifer Orr of Shutterbug Photography is too cute! Working from her renovated studio of exposed brick with an industrial but cozy feel, her work takes on a fresh twist to traditional photography, as the picture she took above displays, and she is an avid volunteer taking pictures for all sorts of good causes and charity events. She is honest, sweet, and extremely comfortable to speak with, as she would be with any client.

Enjoy this imaginative table scape done by the awe inspiring Mr. Preston Bailey. With various shades of grass & chartreuse green it reminds me that Spring is indeed in the air. Over the top....yes Preston however, would not have it any other way.

My favorite design aspect of the table would be the plates. With an outline of fresh light green florals and a pop of white linen set atop the clear plate elaborates the natural green leaf used as a napkin ring. The touch of silver accents with candlelight to offset the green moss thoroughly compliments the gorgeous etching on the stemware. This table leaves me with nothing less than a fresh unconventional perspective.

One of our favorite things to do is NETWORK! And taste testing goes hand-in-hand with networking and getting to know our local vendors and other professionals in this fabulous and creative industry. Mark and Kurt from Las Vegas Cheesecakes, a local Grand Rapids cheesecake shop, invited us out to taste some of their popular cakes, and we fell in love. Sherrie of ele3 is quite the homemade cheesecake baker herself, and she was totally impressed! They have certain menu items that are best sellers, but they are not opposed to thinking outside of the box either, give them a call, or go in to purchase a cheesecake, umm, umm, good!

Last Tuesday ele3 had the opportunity to connect with Cascade Winery, located right on East Beltline in Grand Rapids.

The afternoon proved to be very informative, through the exchange of different business ideas and discussion on why we love doing what we do! The winery offers a variety of services for all types of customers.

Cascade Winery is a cozy, intimate place for tasting or bottling your own wine, but they offer some special treats as well, like their pasta and wine night cooked by Bob himself, or their chocolate, cheese and wine night. One of the ladies of ele3 had the opportunity to travel to the beautiful Grand Cayman, B.W.I. last week. During her relaxing and rejuvenating stay, she was able to meet with the very lovely Amanda Jay from the Westin Casuarina Resort and Spa. Located on the pristine seven mile beach, the hotel has everything and more for your destination wedding. We highly recommend checking it out, and if destination weddings don't suit your fancy, then it is a perfect location for your honeymoon.

When registering for your fine china do not be opposed to thinking outside of the box. If you would like to do something different and still have a classic appeal try your local antique or thrift stores. I guarantee you will find china that is beautifully unique and has defined character. If you find a set of china you cannot live without but it is the only set left do not hesitate to mix & match. You can easily find a theme with the china you adore and elaborate with other flattering pieces. The above image reflects an array of different china with a gorgeous gold theme. If you choose to alter your china with a variety of different pieces you will end up creating a table affair that will be breathtaking.

For your fine dining flatware I recommend an eclectic look by going to either estate sales or ebay and buying bulk silver flatware. You will be surprised to find the treasure that lies beneath the tarnished mass is actually a brilliant, shiny, ornate piece of stunning flatware.

More often than not beautiful china gets tucked away and not used except for special occasions or the holidays. Live it up! Our personal opinion is treat yourself like a queen everyday and your new hubby like the king you know he is! You have the china to use have a party everyday and most of all have a wonderful time while you do it!

Finding your style is an essential part of your bridal registry. Always remember to register for more sets of tableware than needed because accidents will happen and your lovely tableware will break! Keep in mind that after you are married your style is going to change in the years to come. This is helpful when you chose your flatware, fine china, every day dinnerware & stemware. We recommend going with a dish set that is classic so that you can interchange by dressing it up or giving it a modern day flare. This is easily achieved by going with a solid color dish set. Choosing a solid dish as your base allows you to mix and match while accenting with your linens leaving you with numerous options to dress your table for a summer tea or bright & cheery for the Christmas season.

This enables the soon to be wedded couple to relax, have a date night, call in Chinese and register without even leaving the comfort of their own homes. The bride is the fairest of them all! Well, the mirror is not on the wall for this bride but I could not resist this beautiful centerpiece! I love that when you add a little height to the mirror it adds a new element for the commonly used centerpiece. When you elevate the mirror centerpiece a different level of sophistication is added in, literally! With the candles tucked in close to the vase this centerpiece creates a warm invitation of class and elegance that simply can not be refused. I also could not resist showing off this beautiful fresh spring bouquet. This lovely bouquet was done by Sebesta Design, a talented florist in Lansing. The chartreuse green in the stunning floral bundle goes hand in hand with the below invitation. Although I do love the winter wonderland we have been in, there is something about Spring that inspires warm lovely thoughts of long sunny days which are coming near.

Yes, our Martha has done it again! Martha Stewart has mixed the above awe inspiring design to illuminate a room and leave your guest wanting nothing but more. I love this design because there is so much you can do with it! Not only for your Christmas Décor but you can take it to another level and use it with your dinner parties and of course weddings. I can just imagine a large scale canvas as a back drop at the altar at an outdoor wedding on a warm mid-summers eve. Soft luminary candles in large votives lining the aisle runner and welcoming the beautiful bride’s arrival. It spells nothing but romance and leaves your imagination in a whirlwind of inspiration! Budget Birthday

What do we as event planners do when we are not planning someone else's party? Plan someone else's party of course! Kate's sister turned 24 earlier this month, and as a present to her, she hired a chef, otherwise known as "Dad" to cook authentic chinese food Hibatchi style for a few friends and relatives. The ambiance was authentic as well, beautiful silk, gold and pink dishes with chopsticks straight from a trip to China, lanterns with a soft glow, and pretty silk orchids lined the table. The 4 course dinner lasted from the early evening into the wee hours of the night, and in between courses they sipped on sake (sa-kay) cosmos. We do apologize for the quality of the pictures.

Parties like this can take weeks to plan, but also can be put together with what you have at home already. Ask your dad or another relative to cook, use what you have stocked in your bar and add a simple, inexpensive ingredient to fit your theme. Use clothes, dishes, flowers from your garden, branches and leaves from trees, or anything else that you have around the house to spice up the theme as well. Above all, if you have a few munchy items, drinks to share, and a few friends, your party will be a success.

Sorry my fellow blogger this post is a little late! The above pics are a photo shoot elé3 did back in mid October for the Grand Volute. If any lovely bride is looking for a magnificent intimate outdoor venue that offers a soft romance about it, the Grand Volute has just the spot for you! The Grand Volute asked elé3 to come up with a design to showcase their outdoor venue. The outcome was spectacular. The style we decided to go with was Modern Day Romance. This was accented with straight lines but rose petals to soften, and shades of pink to keep a sweetness about it. The delicious cake that looks too pretty to eat is done by a fellow friend and preferred vendor, Barb from Sweet Cakes. Although the day started off a bit blustery the wind died off just in time for some exquisite evening shots with candle light to illuminate the place settings and accenting all the soft rose petals....sigh. It was a wonderful experience and elé3 enjoyed their day together. Mary Ellen, who is the event coordinator at the Grand Volute was just wonderful and the owner Kent McKay was accommodating to us as well. The Grand Volute provided a wonderful meal, feast actually, for us at lunch time. The food was superb and the company was extraordinary. The day was a success; fun to be able to do what you love and have friendship in the mix, elé3 would not have it any other way. The wonderful pictures were taken by Kathy Ortwine, Kate's loving husband Matt, and our magnificent partner Sherrie. Again all the lovely flowers were supplied by a local vendor Kingdom of Flowers, in Greenville. Please do enjoy the pics and soak up the romance! =)

"Green," Pink, and Lots of Black

This weekend was a baby shower given by one of the partners of ele3. The honoree is a woman whose favorite holiday is Halloween, and favorite color is black. Now, I would NOT call her Gothic by any means, her preference in black is tasteful, and is shown by the adorable little baby clothes that she registered for, and the baby room, done in pink and black polka dots. She was given 5 black onesies, with the saying "my little black dress" in silver. She also received hand sewn blankets and other hand made clothes that were black, but with the accent color pink.

For the color scheme we used lots of black, a touch of pink, and going "green", and what's the golden rule of going "green?" That's right! Renew, reuse, recycle, and supporting Michigan businesses, I like to throw this one in for good measure.

To support our local businesses we purchased food from nearby farmers, and food from Meijer, a Michigan based grocer. I would have liked to tell you that we picked fruit and veggies from out back, but we just started here, so maybe next year we can have an ele3 garden. We wanted to keep with the black theme, so we chose black magic roses from family owned and operated, The Flower Garden, a florist in town. We reused pink, and black polka dot cardstock, glass bowls, linens, and borrowed dishes from family, as it is better to use real dishes than paper, in the "green" world. Lastly, we found a very cool organic ribbon that we used to tie the napkins and silverware together. This wonderfully rip, tear, and curl ribbon is from Cream City Ribbon.

And the present from the hostess was a book called Raising Baby Green.

Ahhhh, a happy mommy-to-be, and a happy earth.

Miami Party

This past weekend, I flew down to Miami for a 30th birthday party, Puerto Rican style. The theme of the evening was Movie star-esque. First of all, the invites were movie tickets, that explained the run-down of the evening, and the dress code, which happened to be black, white, beige, and brown. It was done this way, so that the birthday girl (celebrity movie star) could not be outdone. There was a red carpet that all the guests walked down when they arrived, and where the Photographer a.k.a. Paparazi, took pictures of the guests arriving, and then posed in front of the famous white dress, picture of Marilyn Monroe . He flashed his camera all night long and unexpectedly, just like the Paparazi. From there a DJ was playing lounge music, and we were able to mingle with the other guests and munch on appetizers and sip cocktails. After all the guests had arrived, the honoree was announced and made her grand entrance up the red carpet in a beautiful, red, ballroom gown, with a silver broach at the empire waistline. She said a few words, and then the party began. Lots of reggaeton, hot, latin, salsa music, hip-hop and more cocktails. For a surprise birthday present, a spanish, love-ballad singer was hired, where he swooned the birthday girl with his amazing voice. The evening ended at midnight where party favors were handed out. A burned CD with a similar mix of that evening's music play list, and a shot glass with the birthday girl's famous saying.

What can we take from this as event designers and planners? A new trend. . . although this was reminiscent of a coming of age party, it was a 30th birthday party, much past the naive sweet 16 days. This woman was celebrating herself, a successful, career-oriented woman, living independently. So, what better way to celebrate the sometimes dreaded 30th birthday then to go all out.

For those of you out there that may have watched the great show "Sex and the City" this particular evening reminded me of one episode where Carrie went to a friend's babyshower, and lost one of her very expensive Monolo shoes. She was furious, and demanded her friend to pay for a new pair. Well, her friend did not understand this frame of thinking what-so-ever, and so Carrie put it into perspective for her. You see, Carrie is single and childless, and over the years she has been to numerous weddings and showers where she has bought lavish gifts, but this has all been with no return for her. So, she decides enough is enough, and she will have a shower for herself, complete with a gift registry at a Monolo shoe store.

And this my friend is the new trend for big city women, women who are past the momentous celebrations of age and career, and who just want to celebrate themselves.
